....A True Story of a Quilt Repairedr.....
Original quilt was approx 30 years old, hand made & hand tied. Well loved, it developed lots of holes and the batting was ripped & torn. First step involved separating the layers (thankfully it was only tied) & throwing away the old batting. The backing was still in great shape & it was saved to use again. Similar fabrics from my stash were selected to match the original quilt fabrics.
Then slowly and systematically, block strips were replaced as needed.
Small holes were repaired by hand sewing tiny stitches.
A layer of light weight fusible interfacing was added to the backside of the quilt top for stability.
Using the original backing and fresh cotton batting, the quilt was finished on my Janome Long Arm Quilting machine. A sea turtle stitch pattern I had recently learned added a new aspect of the owner's childhood memories to the quilt.
This process is time consuming and expensive. While this quilt is not a collector's item, it is a valued & cherished item within this owner's family and it was a pleasure to repair this quilt.
Just as a measure, if you are considering have a quilt repaired, I spent many hours on this twin sized quilt and the final charge was well over $700.00.
And please keep in mind that while I do beautiful work, I am not certified nor qualified to work on antique or collector quilts. Repairs to those quilts are best left to the professionals.
